The Wicked Teaser Trailer
Film: The Wicked
Year of Release: 2012 Director: Peter Winther Production/ Financing company: A.C.I Films Principle Cast: Devon Werkheiser, Nicole Forester, Justin Deeley, Cassie Keller, Caitlin Carmichael Film Origin/ Info: It is not a franchise, and it isn't based on any true life story Synopsis: A bedtime story nearly every kid in the small town of Summerset has heard. A silly story passed down from generation to generation about a witch that has returned to haunt the town of Summerset. However this year is very
different as Seven year old Amanda Drake has been swiped from her bedroom window. Rumours swirl around the town, “The Witch has returned”. Always up for a good fright and a good time to enjoy themselves and impress the girls, 18 year old Zach and his mates decide to sneak into the woods and find the mysterious old house where the legendary Witch supposedly lives. Unknown to Zach, his younger brother Max and Max's "girlfriend" Sammy tag along. They all soon discover that traditional stories aren’t always myth and that sometimes bedtime stories do come true. There are no captions used in the trailer, however towards the end of the trailer the name of the film is revealed in bold writing. This is very effective because this will make the audience want to find out more about the movie from the trailer they have just watched. There is no information about the film in the trailer, this might get audience members to go and do research in order to know more about the film and end up watching it.
The Title of the film is basic but very attractive. It is placed over a dark sky and has trees in the fore ground. This helps to carry on the gloomy atmosphere of the trailer. This is very effective because it will attract the audience. Also as this is the only information given to the audience about the trailer, it will help them look up more information on the film.
There are a lot of cut-aways and fade-aways used in the trailer to create tension and build up thrill for the audience. This is very effective as the trailer starts of very slow paced, then gets faster and faster. Having a lot of cut-aways links to the pace of the trailer because a lot of things are going on, this helps build the fear of the audience attracting them to watch the film.
There is a voice over (narration) of a teenage girl explaining to her friends about the "senior dare". This narration goes on through most of the trailer. The audience is shown when the girl is speaking but as the trailer goes on and more things are happening e.g. the showing of the house, the narrative still carries on.
The music has the effect of shocking the audience as it begins and gives them a sense of foreboding and helps to build tension. As the trailer continues the voice over is used to give exposition info for the trailer this is good as it gets the background info out of the way so the trailer can be to purely just to pull the audience in without worrying about people not knowing what is going on. As more things happen, the narration gets more and more interesting helping to add more tension to the trailer The trailer is slow paced as the beginning starting of with the little girl explaining to her mum that the witch is coming to get her, this is a very effective way to start the trailer as it engages the audience, as the audience watches the trailer more, through the narrative the pace of the trailer is still slow to catch the audience attention as it is like a story being told by the teenager explaining a little bit what the film is about. Towards the end of the trailer the pace begins to build up, this is to create tension as sounds and more noises are brought in to build up the intensity of the trailer. The use of slow and fast pace really engages the audience and is a good to use because it will bring a thrill and also scare them.
The Wicked comes under the sub-genre psychological/ supernatural.
The style of the trailer comes under the horror genre as its quick and snappy that compresses and gets a lot into something that’s only roughly a minute long. It’s different to a normal horror movie as paranormal is quite a different/ unique kind of psychological horror because its more built into a family’s lifestyle or culture. Normal horror genre features are all commonly shown in the Mise- en- scene of the trailer/ movie. In this case in trailer “The Wicked” props used were props used in people’s everyday life and in a normal film because it’s based around real life and the life of the family. The setting could support the horror genre features as it’s based in the woods and in the suburb and in some horrors they are set and do sometimes take place in homes to build up the tension and suspense more. Costume is just everyday normal clothing nothing relating to the horror genre in any way. NVC supports the psychological horror genre as there are some suspicious discussions about what’s taking place in their town spiritually and about the witch that haunted the town a couple years back. |
Location: The trailer is shown to be set in a suburb. This is shown as
there are houses in a very residential area away from the city. The film is also set in the woods as this is where the haunted house is set. As footage from the teaser trailer we get a establishing shot of the house which starts off the movie. This house is set to be in the suburb as this is the location that the trailer is set in.
As the scene changes there is a wide angle shot of a little girl in her bed who has just woken up from a nightmare she was having. This scene helps get the audience attraction because her mum comes in to comfort her, this helps the movie start off as she starts to talk about "The Wicked" and how she is coming to haunt her.
As the scene changes, the haunted house is then revealed, this is the house that everyone is talking about. "The Wicked" House, It is shown to be set in the house and looks very broken down. There is minimal lighting and only little rays of sunshine around that area. The location used for the house is very gloomy and will attract audience members.
There is a freeze frame of all the main characters used in the trailer, I think this is very effective as the audience would know every main character, also as they were up to no good, this freeze frame helped capture them in action. This shot is a wide angled shot as it shows all the characters.
The theme of the trailer is based around the Witch who has come back to haunt the suburb. This is shown in the trailer as that is all everyone is talking about.
The protagonist is revealed in the trailer. There are various shots which show when the witch harms her victim but at 0:56, the protagonist is revealed to be looking at the camera. This is shown using a long shot.

Movie Poster
Film: The Wicked
Year of Release: 2012 Director: Peter Winther Production/ Financing company: A.C.I Films Principle Cast: Devon Werkheiser, Nicole Forester, Justin Deeley, Cassie Keller, Caitlin Carmichael Film Origin/ Info: It is not a franchise, and it isn't based on any true life story The main purpose of the film poster is to incite awareness towards audience members and target audiences and generate hype for the film. The making of the movie posters helps market and distribute the film as more people are able to view these posters in various places. The intentions of the film posters are to make people want to
go and see the film or to raise awareness with intentions of selling more copies Mood: This movie poster is set to be a very spooky/ tension and suspense building mood. There’s a lot of sickening things shown through the poster. The dirty walls bring a sense of disgust as they look very tacky and are unclean. The mood that this poster
projects is a mood where you want to find out what’s going to happen as the little girl looks very lost and frightened, what has happened and what’s caused this to happen and this is where the suspense and the tension building comes in because you want all these questions answered and to get that to happen you have to watch the movie so the mood that this poster has is important because it draws the audience in wanting to watch the movie. Font/Names: The font/names are not very visible in the poster; this was done maybe to abstract the unknown characters because these aren’t famous. Sans Serif font is used on the poster, this is well suited with the genre of horror as it is very Bold.
Anchorage: “Ding Dong: The Witch Is Alive…” this connotes to the image behind the little girl showing a creature witch looking person, showing that the witch is alive. Tag-line: The tag line, which appears above the creatures head, reads “Ding Dong: The Witch Is Alive…” is in normal sans serif font and is bold so it stands out to the viewer. The tag line creates a sense of tension and anxiety that links to the picture of the little girl and the creature behind her. |
Synopsis: A bedtime story nearly every kid in the small town of Summerset has heard. A silly story passed down from generation to generation about a witch
that has returned to haunt the town of Summerset. However this year is very different as Seven year old Amanda Drake has been swiped from her bedroom window. This movie poster follows the conventions of a horror film genre
in many ways. This is because it indicates that this belongs to the horror film genre is by the main image, which is in a long shot of the little girl and her surroundings, this shot helps audience members able to view everything that’s happening in the background. The main colour scheme of this poster consists of predominantly
low-key lighting, alongside the trailer along with some red and white text. The little girl (main image) surrounding are also very dark which connotes she has something mysterious about her. The room that she is in looks very dull and unclean. The low-key lighting of the poster also creates a sense of loneliness, fear and anxiety which all fit in with the genre of the film. Behind the girl is a ghostly like creature , behind the creature is a mixture of grey creating a misty/Smokey effect. This is used to make the creature and the girl stand out and to add a sense of mystery to the poster We could link the colours on the poster to many things, such as
red used for the writing which connotes bloodshed and black which something mysterious and spooky, decay or possibly death and I believe the colour scheme was used in addition with the mis-en-scene to create a unwelcoming feeling. This is linked to the picture because the little girl looks very scared and it is very unlikely to catch someone of that age in a very dirty place. She looks lost. I believe that the non-verbal communication of the little girl is very mysterious as she looks very scared cold and lonely as she is looking away from the camera, clutching her fists tightly together. This could suggest that she is petrified and doesn’t know where she is. The setting is deserted corridor, which denotes dirt and messiness as shown in the poster. This is backed up by the girl’s choice of clothing, she is dressed in rags. |
Magazine
Masthead - The masthead of the magazine is displayed in a sans serif font, this font is easily recognisable and also as the masthead has been changed in order to create fire coming out from it, the use of this makes the masthead look more interesting and spooky. The use of red connotes blood and death. The masthead is placed behind the main characters head, also as the movie is titled hell boy 2, having fire coming out from the masthead connotes and is in conjunction with the word "hell".
Main Image- The main image is placed in the middle on the
magazine. A Medium shot was used to create this as it is most effective in gaining the audience attention, having a image of the main character will attract more readers as more people would know more about the film from the 1st one made. The main image is made using a medium shot to be in eye contact with the reader, this is because the main character "hell boy" is shown to be making full eye contact, making it look as if he is looking directly at the reader, this is very effective because it could spook the reader also get them more engaged as it looks like he is looking directly at them. This is the main focus point of the magazine, having an effective main image attracts a lot of audience members as it makes them go "wow, that is really good" Cover-lines - The magazine uses a variety of cover lines which
are spread around the main image. The use of these cover lines are used to make the magazine seem more interesting and engages the reader to read on, and find out what might be in the rest of the magazine, also having the cover line short and snappy it detracts from the main focus of the main image but also gives the reader enough information about what is in the magazine. The cover line is made up of two colours, gold and white. The use of two main colours is very effective as the cover line runs over the image, having only two main colours which are suttle doesn't distract the reader away from the main image however it gets its point across. |
Dateline- The dateline as shown is in between the "M" in the masthead, this reveals, March 2009 as this is when the magazine was published, having the dateline in between the Masthead isn't very effective as it isn't very recognizable.
Main cover line- The main cover line is shown at the bottom of
the page. It says "You and whose golden army?" This cover line is made to make reference to the movie hell boy as the new release of the hell boy film is the golden army. Having a main cover line in connotation to the film is very effective as it gains the readers attention, also as the cover line is short and snappy, and also asking a rhetorical question, it engages the reader as it gets them thinking about what it actually means. The cover line is made using a gold colour, this connotes to the saying in the cover line "golden army" this is very effective as it is linked. Lighting - The lighting of the image is quite dark, it is low-key
lighting, this is because as the film is horror, having low-key lighting makes the image appear more spooky. Bar code- Standard bar code used by retailers. This is so that
each magazine is easily identified and also so that it can be purchased. NVC - The NVC of the main character is quite straight forward, he
looks like he is there for business and he is really angry, this is because his fists are tightly gripped together and he is grinding his teeth. The use of this NVC is linked to the colour red, this also connotes anger as the model looks very angry. The NVC of the main character is very effective as it is connotation with the whole look of the magazine. The main characters NVC is very angry and serious and almost like
he means business and that no one should get in his way. The setting on this horror magazine Is not very clear where he is because the background is very dark. The models doesn’t seem to have a costume on he looks to be dressed in his own skin Finally the shot size is a medium close up showing what he’s wearing almost (only the top half) and his NVC. |
